Alaska law provides that the Ounalashka Corporation’s stock is subject to special probate or estate settlement procedures. OC is required to determine the proper heirs of OC stock in accordance with any valid will the shareholder may have executed that is applicable to the stock, or — if no such will exists — under Alaska laws on intestate succession.

A copy of a shareholder’s will, which includes provision for his or her OC stock, should be on file with the OC Shareholder Affairs Department.

OC has a simple will form available that applies only to OC stock. Alternatively, disposition of OC stock can be effected through the provisions of a general will by including language specifically disposing of the stock. A shareholder may wish to consult an attorney regarding an appropriate will for individual circumstances. Please contact the OC Shareholder Affairs Department with questions.

The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) permits ANCSA stock to be transferred as a gift from a holder to siblings or lineal descendants (child, grandchild, great-grandchild, niece, nephew) if the holder has reached the age of majority (18). The recipient of shares transferred by such a gift must be a Native or a descendant of a Native who is related to the gift or by blood or adoption and not simply by marriage.

If under 18 years of age, Alaska law requires that shareholders who receive stock in a Native Corporation must have their stock issued to a custodian. Information concerning the gifting and custodian processes are available at the OC Shareholder Affairs Department.

Direct lineal descendants (e.g., the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc.) of voting OC shareholders must register their information with OC. Descendants who are already OC shareholders do not need to enroll.

The information submitted through the registration process is being collected to:

– improve communications with descendants who may become OC shareholders in the future through gifting or inheritance

– provide information on potential opportunities and activities

– aid the Edna P. McCurdy Foundation in establishing proof of eligibility for scholarships

Please note that the Edna P. McCurdy Foundation now requires descendants who are not currently a shareholder of OC to register as a descendant to apply for funding. The process aids the foundation in the administration of its programs by allowing it to access and use submitted documents for eligibility purposes.

With each successive generation, it is becoming more challenging to document a descendant’s relationship to an original shareholder. Collecting the information now makes the application process easier for both current and future generations. To encourage descendants to maintain updated contact information, quarterly prize drawings are conducted from the names of all confirmed descendants.

Your completed application (download form) with required documents should be returned to:

The Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) received a grant in the amount of $35.1 million on behalf of 73 Tribes, ANCs, and Tribal organizations. The grant is intended to reduce barriers to broadband usage among Alaska Natives by providing broadband-enabled devices, subsidizing broadband service, and implementing digital skills and workforce training for each Shareholder household. Additionally, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration just announced another grant opportunity to bring broadband and computer equipment to communities through its Digital Equity Program.

OC has already been notified by AFN that it will receive a portion of the $35.1 million; however, the exact amount is unknown at this time. OC has also submitted its request to NTIA under the Digital Equity Program. This grant has not yet been awarded; however, award amounts are between $50,000-$150,000 per ANC.

What we do know is that under both funding opportunities, OC will be required to provide AFN and NTIA specific information regarding shareholders and electronics in each household.

This information must include: (a) the number of shareholders that reside in the household; (b) how many computers are currently in the household; (c) how many printers; (d) how many household members are enrolled in school; and (e) what grade level(s) (to include Kindergarten through College/Grad School). In order to obtain this information, we need each shareholder and/or head of household to complete this application providing the details requested below to us. OC will be required to provide the requested information to AFN and NTIA shortly after it is requested by each. Therefore, THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING THIS APPLICATION/BEING ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT/FUNDS IS AUGUST 15, 2022.
